An Interview with Durel Yates of Suplecs...

2005 is shaping up to be a great year for the heavy, and for evidence I cite the new release from New Orleans` Suplecs. It`s arguably their toughest release so far, and should easily convert the uninitiated. I ran the short form by guitarist/vocalist Durel Yates to see what`s up with the fellas.

- Metal and Beer

Interview By: Metal and Beer Date: 3/10/2005 7:07:39 AM

Dave: The album`s a killer, bro. I was pleasantly surprised to hear some serious metal and a lot more aggression this time around.

Durel: Glad you dug the record. Yeah, it`s definitely more aggressive. I think this one represents us more than any other. You can hear all of our influences on this one - early punk, metal, blues, southern....

Dave: Where`d the title come from? Nice cover art, too.

Durel: The title is an inside joke. We were on tour in Canada, and our merch guy Pat looked at me and said, "Man, why do you look so bummed out?" and I replied, "I`m poutin` on the outside and partying on the inside." Danny said, "That`s our new album title!" And it just sounds so New Orleans. It would be what some local New Orleans funk band would call their record. We thought it was funny, and I love it when people think we`re serious about stupid shit like that. I still read stuff about people who take the song "Moped" literally. We think it`s funny to put stupid, retarded lyrics to tough riffs. We don`t take ourselves too seriously. Steve "whatstyle" Williams did the cover art

Dave: I see Pepper`s got some guest spots. Didn`t he produce it as well? Nice to see some NOLA boys involved.

Durel: Yeah, Pepper played slide guitar and back up vocals on "Gotta Pain." He also produced it. It wasn`t all fun and games, but he made us play our asses off and didn`t settle.

Dave: A question on a lot of folks` minds - when are you fellas gonna hit the interstates and let us hear the new stuff firsthand?

Durel: We definitely want to hit the road sometime after SXSW. We haven`t been to the west coast in a while so we`re thinking we may do that first.

Dave: Suplecs shows are always pretty legendary. Where do you guys like playing the most? Any regions of the country you like more than others?

Durel: We like playing all over the country. Some cities are better than others. We love it when people get into the music and have a good time with us. My favorite show is our annual Mardi Gras day show in New Orleans.

Dave: How are things label-wise? I know that the Man`s Ruin stuff is getting harder to find..any re-release plans or anything?

Durel: Nocturnal Records released our last record. It`s an inhouse label for Balance Studios.

Dave: Well, I have a couple of standard questions I run by everyone, but first, please tell Danny to not let those Saints break his heart. If I looked in your CD changer or turntable right now, what would I find?

Durel: Right now you would find Robin Trowers Bridge of Sighs because we`re learning that song for the new Sucking the 70`s on Small Stone Records. We`re getting Dax from Deadboy and the Elephantmen/ex-Acid Bath to sing it. It`s going to be killer with him singing it.

Dave: Hell yeah, that sounds awesome. Lastly, Deadly D, if you could only bring three albums to Antarctica, what would they be?

Durel: Uggghh, that`s a hard one. Probably Kill em All, Albert Kings Live Wire and the best of Dino Jr.
