The sound of Shovelhead hits very close to home with me. Touches my heart, so to speak. The warm, fuzzy guitar tone and playing style of Jim LaPointe harkens back to the Self Titled "Mudhoney" album - which is my favourite album of all time. The drumming is frantic and piled high with crazy snare rolls and packed with great fills at every corner. The vocals are clean, clear and out front and drenched with feeling and soul. The best thing about Shovelhead is their songs though. There`s not a lot of showing off, effects or overly technical playing going on but the songs are all finely crafted and well written in a very purposeful manner. I highly recommend Shovelhead to all fans of bands like the Stooges, Mudhoney, Nebula, The Monkeywrench, The Glasspack, Core and Solarized. All of that kinda stuff - top notch stuff here.

Shovelhead is about funky bass lines and soothing guitar tones augmented with vocals that blend effortlessly through the grooves of these wicked, meandering jams. I get this big shit-eating grin when I discover a band that I dig this much. Highly recommended.

Shovelhead is a jam rock and roll band hinting into the southern rock culture of things. Reminds me of Allman Brothers, Skynyrd at times. Great guitar rock jams and melodic vocals that are right up front and sparse with jams and rock in between. This stuff is definitely hinting in southern rock, but make no mistake- it`s the 70`s classic jams that really makes it for me, blues drenched guitar solos and soul. If you are into bands that have the jam like Five Horse Johnson or Mississippi Sludge, then you will probably dig on this. Swamp blues rock and roll to go!
