Accolades for Siamese Pipe
Being a long time fan of the Cows, I have a hard time not digging The Heroine Sheiks. Well, they are pretty similar, but yet different to the Cows. Weird songs, but nicely structured with fuzzed out bass, strange tempos and weird off the wall lyrics which is exactly what I would expect from Shannon Selberg. Musically it reminds me of Ed Hall more than anything with the bizarre abstract guitars, weird tempos and slamming clear drums. Guitar work is actually pretty incredible on this album, reminds me of a cross between Duane Dennison of Jesus Lizard and Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers. If you are into everything from Ed Hall to Beck, The Butthole Surfers to Ween, then you will certainly appreciate The Heroine Sheiks...off the wall and just damn good for what it is. Like being on acid without dropping. :)
On their new release, Siamese Pipe, they take the world and twist it apart and make you see life on their terms. Mixing slow down low grooves with keyboards (yes, keyboards), The Heroine Sheiks create an eerie and mesmerizing soundscape. Over this backdrop, Shannon spins his tales about schoolgirls and evil bosses. By the end of this recording, you will either wonder what the hell you just bought or you will turn it up and come to terms with the cockroaches crawling around in your head. Its bands like The Heroine Sheiks that make you want to be a freak and live on the fringes.
The pedigree of the marvelously named The Heroine Sheiks is undeniable. Shannon Selberg formed the band after the break-up of Cows and is joined by guitarist Norman Westberg, an alumnus of such legendary outfits as the Swans and Foetus. Siamese Pipe is exactly as caustic as the bands rsum would suggest. Herky-jerky rhythms and guitar nihilism infuse the discs sum. A sinister stimulant that you can actually feel writhe beneath you. An ass-kicking send-up of sludgy, bluesy, grindy darkness from which no light can escape. A musical black hole where tempos and volume levels change, though the intensity only seems to increase. A contrasting bombast that is chilling.
