Accolades for Also Rising
Followers of today's psychedelic/experimental rock underground have long found rapture and reverence in the total lysergic experience of SubArachnoid Space. Since their inception in 1996 and over the course of seven full-length albums, the San Francisco-based quartet have spun a web of dynamically textured trip-scapes induced almost entirely from total improvisation, drawing a torrent of praise in the process. Every one of their recordings display a steady evolution in their unique brand of improvised drone rock, with each one exploring a myriad of different textures. For their eighth album, the band has honed their craft into a finely sharpened prism, a record aimed for your gut as well as your head. Also Rising is the new revelatory oracle, the band's most powerful, focused and simply finest recording to date.
If you like psychedelic space rock, then you've come to the right place. SubArachnoid Space have a nice ambient sound that sort of expresses itself by swelling and having sudden mood changes. The songs on this CD aren't just thrown together, it's quite the opposite. It seems rather pretty well and cleverly orchestrated, and the songs kind of progress like older Pink Floyd tunes such as Echoes. The sound seems to come in and out, but not emo-core style with a sudden drop down... This stuff is guitars, keyboards and often tribal sounding drums. Good overall vibe- if you like Slint then this is more than likely up your alley. This CD will surprise you, I find at times it can sound as heavy as early Jesus Lizard.
