Accolades for Harms Way
Possibly the most underrated, overlooked band in the entire doom/stoner genre, Terra Firma have followed up thier fantastic 1999 debut with another brilliant album. The caliber of musicianship is one of this band's strongest features; they don't show off, but it is very apparent that these guys are serious players - particularly the extremely tight rhythm section. The songwriting also bears the mark of experience (Lord Chritus was in Count Raven and Saint Vitus, Fredda was in Unleashed) which further sets them apart from so many stoner bands who have "the sound", but lack the songs. Every track is heavy, yet catchy, memorable, and varied enough to keep ones attention throughout the entire album. Terra Firma are a band who sit comfortably along the likes of Spirit Caravan, Church of Misery, and Cathedral in that they should have no problem appealing to both doom metal fans, and stoner rock fans.
The Scandinavians continue to rock hard like they did on their debut but this time the songs are more worked out and inspired. Classic doom is what these 4 guys offer. Harms Way is a very strong record with great lyrics by Lord Chritus. Another surprising element of the record are some small acoustic psychedelic parts that float throughout it. All these parts may hint that the band wants to experiment into less heavy sounds in the future and thats very welcome in my humble opinion. But again, Harms Way rocks too fucking hard.
