Accolades for Requesting Permission to Land
Taking their queue from early Monster Magnet and Blue Cheer, Volume describe their music best as Heavy Acid Rock, drawing inspiration from a time when rock n roll was truly experimental and free. The end result of this potent blend can be heard within Requesting Permission To Land, 34 minutes of psychedelic fuzzfest freakout. After recent shows with Stoner heavyweights Queens Of The Stone Age, Fu Manchu and Nebula, the current vibe surrounding Volume is hot. This may be some of the sludgiest riffs you're likely to hear this year and then when the sweeping net of psychedelic waves of sound starts to bring back on bad-acid flashbacks, you too will be scanning the skies for a sign and chanting out aloud Permission Granted!
Requesting Permission to Land reminds me of a lot of things. The guitar tones and wah solos remind me of Grand Magus, Roachpowder, Black Nasa...the overall production of this CD is like a cross between Spine of God and Mammoth Volume's 'Early Years'...the drums have that same sort rumble to them as early Zeppelin. Musically, this stuff is fuzzed out to the balls at times- grooves that remind me of Nebula or Fu Manchu, but with more 'umph'. The stuff is layered in solos and weird effects that give it a super psychedelic acid feel. The first tune 'Habit' has some serious depth...lots of fuzz and riffs makes this band from the get go.
