Accolades for Red Led or Death
Spain's Mermaid have kind of a unique sound that is rooted in classic rock influences and spanish sounds. When I read of their origin it all made more sense...it's desert vibes with tons of cool guitars that reminds me of everything from Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Deep Purple with newer twists and extreme mood changes. Most of this record is hard rock guitar oriented desert stuff. There are layers of guitars that play off of each other often doing different things at once and really adding to the overall depth of the record. Also tons of instrumentation done including the vocals...layers of melodic vocals with lyrics sung with a strong Spanish accent often. More than anything it's psychedelic desert guitar rock with tinges of pop. Gotta love all the vintage sounding effects on everything, including the keyboards.
I fucking love these guys! Monster Magnet meets Los Natas meets WE! Highly recommended to heavy-psych lovers!
Considered the most promising band in Spain, they have played big festivals and opened the spanish shows of bands like QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, ZEN GUERRILLA, GLUECIFER, MAN OR ASTROMAN?, etc. And now here it is, their third and best to date album, with shorter songs with a hard-rock flavour, without forgetting their Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Hendrix or Black Sabbath etc. influences. They are not your typical STONER band. They mix the density of the heavy guitars and slow-mid tempos with some faster beats which will appeal to both the KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, FU MANCHU fans as well as the punkier side of the Scandinavian hordes of HELLACOPTERS; TURBONEGRO and GLUECIFER, and the heavier riffs of the classic hard rock pioneers BLUE CHEER and such. Altogether in the very special MERMAID
