Accolades for No Angel or Demon
Well for most of you the Pentagram reference will suit just fine. If you guys liked that Relapse record release First Daze Here with all the early recordings of Bobby Liebling and Co., then chances are you will totally love this 7 inch, especially the A side, "No Angel or Demon". It has the same kind of feel at times to Pentagram's 'Last Days Here' vocally and musically. The drums are precise and slippery just like the early Pentagram material for sure, and the leads are bluesy, soulful and classic. Now 'You Bury Your Head' reminds me a bit more of Sabbath from the get go. This song is one pure classic evil sounding doom masterpiece. Starts out like Spiral Architect and has sort of a Master of Reality feel to it through and through. Great evil chord progression and little half step evil flutters that Iommi is famous for. This 7 inch rules, it's nothing new but for what it is, it's pretty damn fucking good.
The first song goes in the vein of bands like Witchfynde, while the other side is more like old Black Sabbath. It is no secret that this band evokes feelings in me that I haven't felt since I discovered Angel Witch, Witchfinder General and the likes. Alone that fact must be reason enough to check this out. I have a real hard time to imagine this being a new band, as it totally sounds like some old forgotten British band. Even the recording itself (production wise) has an overwhelming obscure atmosphere. Listen to HEAVY bass lines on side B and you'll know how this music should be played. This band sounds cult!
I have reviewed a lot of doom and stoner rock bands, but none of them sounds so "seventies" than Witchcraft. This band seems to have taken their guitars and Fender amps and cranked them to create these sounds. The feeling of the two tracks contained here is really psychedelic with interesting melodies that takes you back to the early seventies era of heavy rock. The guitar riffs are really rhythmic and fit pefectly with Jens Henriksson drumbeats which are almost hypnotic. Fans of seventies rock or stoner or doom will surely like this single. Also the vinyl helps a lot to the total product taking you some years back in time. A great band.
