Accolades for
You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

Canadian bass/drum duo that does the pop - come - Devo - robot- rock thing, very similar to the first QotSA album. In fact a couple of riffs/song structures sound eerily similar to that album. Following other modern duos like Big Business and OM, the bass is fucking MASSIVE on this, so you don't ever miss a guitar. Quite a bit of electronic/synth fuckery going on too, the vocals are a bit precious at times, but overall the album is very well recorded and heavy!

What Death from Above 1979 have is the ability to make such music danceable. I could hear this played at either a dingy rock club or at a warehouse rave. It may sound mechanical at times, but its not stiff. In fact, its got as much in common with Queens of the Stone Age and Biblical Proof of UFOs as they do with 80s synth acts. The punchier songs bridle with anxious energy, adding early punk to the equation. Whats also worth noting that Death from Above 1979 is a two piece, with just bass and drums. The lack of guitar isnt noticeable, and the fact that this is one giant low-end groove gives more of a reason to get up and jump around. Seriously, this is an album thats not only heavy but puts a jiggle in your booty. Think of a mutation of Milligram, QOTSA, Devo, NoMeansNo, and The Cars, with platform shoes, brass knuckles, and a technicolor dream coat.

The bands sound can be described in one word: HUGE. Turn it Out starts the album off with a frantic riff, pounding snares, and crashing cymbals. The vocals cascade over the fray, absolutely bleeding desperation. The intro to Romantic Rights sounds like a cyborg awakening from rusted slumber. This is the chaotic collision of dissonant noise-rock with accessible, catchy pop. Listening to Youre a Woman, Im a Machine is an anxious experience. The bass tosses about in waves of violence and anger, the drums pound with the force of massive pistons, and the band absolutely spills its guts on the mike.
