If you were just getting into Crowbar and wanted to buy just one CD to get an idea of what they were like..I recommend this one, hands down.

Crowbar can do no wrong. Sonic Excess... has the mid-paced plowing sludge ballads and plenty of balls-out rock. Kirk blows my mind with the range of his constipated vocals - I love it! If I were to compare this to their previous albums, it would be a nice cross between Broken Glass and Time Heals Nothing. This is a wicked slab of rock no matter how you label it.

Great album with a gigantic sound. The guitar chords are full and heavy enough to give it a doomy feel, but the tunes are tighter and more melodic than most doom. Same's true with the vocalist who roars like a fuckin' lion, yet gets surprisingly diverse, even emotional, effects with his voice inflections.
