https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAgmGZ9iQ2YI have to wonder, am I the only person here who got super deep into Vaporwave? It was the bulk of what I listened to for almost half a year. I still do, albeit less. I can go on and on about it, what it represents, how it made me feel like most of the music I listened to was somehow obsolete. As a genre it aimed to capture the false promises capitalism made and never delivered on. That's the core of it, a sort of fever dream from the 90s about the unfolding utopia that never arrived. The music itself is just old pop songs with DJ Screw's "Chopped and Screwed" method of remixing hip hop applied to them. There's all these YouTube videos of Vaporwave music played over old employee training videos, footage of empty shopping malls, commercials from the 80s and 90s, even old Simpsons episodes. All of it is basically "plunderphonics" sounds and videos lifted from other places and re-purposed.
It was sort of an anti-music genre, with no physical location, a complete creature of the internet. One of the few new, original music expressions to be created in a long time.
