StonerRock.com Interviews...
An Interview with Aaron Jacob and Travis of Shamelady...

Shamelady is a hardcore/metal outfit from here in Portland Oregon...their sound is intense and a must see live. I had the chance to ask these guys what the low down on their band is...and this is how it went...

Interview By: robwrong Date: 1/10/2004 12:14:23 PM

Rob: Where is Shamelady from and what is a little background history of the band.(like what are some of the other bands you played in)

Aaron: Shamelady is based out of Portland. Technically we started in Eugene and then my wife and I along with Jacob (bass) moved to Portland together. Travis is kicking it in Salem (which sort of sucks for practice but he manages to make it up a few times per week). Weve all been in bands for a few years.

Rob: The CD that I recently reviewed is great, what is the kind of sound you are trying to capture in the studio to represent Shamelady...and give us the details about the CD.

Aaron: We want to capture the live feeling completely. We are a live band and I dont think any of us are too used to the studio. Were still dialing our sound so the main thing with recording is we want it as it is organic, natural, whatever you want to call it.

Jacob: Andrew Gormley, from the Seattle band Playing Enemy, came down one weekend and recorded us on his computer. Most of the songs were done in one or three takes so we kept it simple. We are a three-piece band and want to sound like that.

Travis: Word to that.

Rob: What are some of the common influences of the band members?

Jacob: The funny thing is we probably have more different influences than common ones, but we all share a passion for music that is meaningful and inspiring. Some common influences include Hum, Coalesce, Pink Floyd, etc.

Rob: What is in your CD player right at this moment?

(whole band): Thirty Ought Six Q and not U Dave Seaman Boards of Canada

Rob: What are some of the other bands around in the last few years that you guys like?

Aaron: Playing Enemy, A Kiss Farewell, Hauler, the mighty YOB, Harkonen, MorseCodeHeartbeat, Team Sleep.

Rob: Who does the songwriting in the band, how does it go down?

Aaron: Usually I come in with a riff then Travis and Jacob help structure and shape it until were all happy.

Travis: Word to that also.

Rob: How often do you guys practice?

Aaron: Too few and far between at this point once or twice a week. Travis moves to Portland soon and then well be hitting it three to four nights a week.

Rob: Do you guys have a website?

Aaron: www.shamelady.com.

Rob: What do you guys do outside of the band? Work hobbies...

Aaron: I work at a bicycle shop wrenching on bikes all day. I listen to music, play music with Shamelady and Ship, be married, have a dog and a cat - Im happy and in love.

Travis: I work at a sandwich shop for right now, which Blows. I am really into electronic music of all kinds right now and have been for the past 5 years or so, so I have been collecting cds and records since then. Spending time with my girlfriend when ever I get to see her.

Jacob: Im usually stuck in traffic.

Rob: Do you guys have any upcoming tours planned? Are there any bands that you would like to support or go on tour with?

Aaron: Were trying to piece together a spring tour. We want to do about two weeks around Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada again. We definitely want to do the whole country in the future but were doing it all ourselves so it takes time you know that sob story. Id love to go out with Isis or Pelican that would just put me into fucking orbit!

Jacob: Our pals YOB.

Travis: Playing Enemy would be rad to tour with.

Rob: Do you guys have anything you would like to add? Anything for the StonerRock.com community?

Aaron: Keep up the good work; I love the fucking site. You guys have your shit together and the readers REALLY listen to music.

Jacob: If youre reading this interview, you might as well download a song while your at it. Also thanks to StonerRock for supporting us.

Travis: Once again, word to that shit dog.

Rob: This is the part of the interview that we call the silly questions...you can answer these questions as long as you wish or as short as you wish, just have fun with them, and thanks again...If you werent a rocker, what would you most like to be?

Travis: Gynecologist

Aaron: Pet owner.

Jacob: An air-guitarist.

Rob: What was your worst gig and why? What was your best gig and why?

Aaron: Our worst was in Eugene at this little church type place. No one even cared and it was just a mall fashion show. Our best was our Blackbird (PDX) show we played with Playing Enemy and Scissorfight. It was fucking great, we played well with two awesome bands, the crowd was receptive, the night was warm, the drinks were flowing, the sound was great and the toilet stalls had doors.

Jacob: What he said.

Travis: Any show with good music being played.

Aaron: What?

Rob: Top three movies, books and albums of all time?

Aaron: Some of my favorite movies are The Endurance, Big Lebowski and Romeo is Bleeding. Favorite books - Northern Lights by Tim OBrien, Under the Roofs of Paris by Henry Miller, The Autobiography of Mohandas K Gandhi. Some favorite albums are Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon, Afghan Whigs Gentleman and Jeff Buckleys Grace.

Jacob: Van Morrison Astral Weeks, John Frusciante-All albums, Pink Floyd- Dark side of the Moon. Im currently reading a good book called Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad.

Travis: Favorite album of all time has to be Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins or Youd prefer an astronaut by Hum Great albums!

Rob: How often do you surf the net and what do you mostly do while online?

Aaron: Not too often - but to check email, band/music sites.

Travis: Word.

Rob: What is your favorite city and venue to play, and why?

Aaron: Portland. Its home. I loved playing the Satyricon (rip) and the Blackbird (rip). They were little slices of PDX rock history.

Jacob: Portland has a lot of cool places to play.

Travis: Well I gotta go with the boys on this one and say Portland.

Rob: What is the most rock `n` roll thing you`ve ever done?

Aaron: Got drunk and puked while asleep.

Jacob: I had a beer once.

Travis: Broke a piece of a drumstick off which flew and stuck in my ear making blood pour down my face and neck, all while still playing the song.

Rob: What`s the most rock `n` roll thing you`ve seen someone else do?

Aaron: Jacob drink beer.

Travis: Word to that also.

Rob: What`s your worst "bad trip" story?

Aaron: In a car or on drugs?

Jacob: At the beach on drugs. With the one armed guy.

Travis: Ah yes, the one armed man who took our picture while we were grillin our balls off on the beach. Great times!

Rob: What`s the most painful thing you have ever witnessed at a rock show?

Aaron: Rapping with seven string drop tuned guitars.

Jacob: Went to Ozzfest a few years back cause I had a free ticket. Aside from Marilyn Manson, that was excruciatingly painful.

Travis: The guitar player taking his shirt off and wearing it on his head like a fucking hat.

Rob: How old were you when you first realize you wanted to rock?

Aaron: 8 or so, I got the Cars Heartbeat City on vinyl and fucking loved it.

Jacob: I went to a Journey concert when I was two years old.

Aaron: Dude, youre so fucking lucky! Youre just a small town boy

Travis: When I was 3, I sat down on my Dads drumset barely naked only wearing his cowboy boots and started beating away to Queen (no pun intended).

Rob: What`s the most embarrassing job you ever had?

Aaron: Tower Records

Jacob: My current one

Travis: I would also have to say my current job.

Rob: What`s your favourite ice cream flavor?

Aaron: Tofuttis Vanilla Fudge

Jacob: Butter Pecan

Travis: Cookie Dough

Rob: If you could date any rock star dead or alive in the world, who would it be? Movie star?

Aaron: Siouxse Sioux and Sharon Tate.

Jacob: I really like Jennifer Tilly. The chick with the raspy voice.

Travis: Gina Gershon !!!

Rob: What would be the ultimate dream gig of all time line-up be, with your band opening? Limit to three bands please (including your own...) and where?

Aaron: Circa 1998 w/ Bloodlet and Coalesce @ Satyricon. 10pm/ 21+/ $5

Jacob: Shamelady, Sonic Youth, and Soundgarden.

Travis: Shamelady, deftones, Hum @ what used to be the old La Luna in Portland.
