Kyuss News

[Kyuss] [News] [Discography] [Trades] [Contact] [Me Me Me] [Conspiracy]

[Enough shit, just get to the News]

Hey there everybody. So, you have been one of the 100 or so people that have found my News page for the late and great Kyuss. Well it is fairly obvious that there will actually be very little news on Kyuss as such, however, what I am able to provide is some news on the bands that have resulted from various members who left it in the past like Nick Oliveri's "Blag Dahlia" & "Mondo Generator" and Brant Bjork's part in "Fu Manchu". These and bands that Josh, John and Scott have been in since Kyuss, are obviously where I will be primarily getting and posting my news from. Enjoy.
What you will find here, is an amendment mainly of what Dominic Giampaolo has done on his marvellous web site on his current employer's server, www.be.com. With all due credit for the excellent job that he did in comprehensively covering the history of the band and his discography, guitar tab, lyrics etc. he is very busy and so does not update the News page in the site very often. So here is an attempt at appending what he already has included on his page
  • Here is Dominic's News page
    Site news
  • New mirror from a kind soul in Germany (aren't they all??) by Angsar Scherp
  • This site you are on is a mirror of Jay's original site in Australia and as such is much less extensive. The news page has all necessary inclusions but there are other parts of the site unavailable here.
  • Well, I have just added a page through which you may all contact me if you havn't got email and do not wish to post a message on the guestbook.
  • This site is one which you are probably very lucky to catch up and running. The ISP that I use has a limit of 300Mb of traffic through the pages I have running after which I am charged at a rate of $0.50 per Mb over or something thereabouts. I have been getting far too much traffic now so the site is being suspended (rather than pay to have this "free" web site) around the 20th of each month. If you heed this message and return on the first few days of the month you will most certainly see the updates that I do each month, check after the 20th and you will most likely get a message from the ISP saying that the website has been suspended. Sorry, but I am not a rich man.

    Kyuss/Band Member news

    • Sunday 1-2-98
  • I have it on good authority "directly via a good freind who is in touch with the band from time to time" that Kyuss are looking to get something together, and soon. A big proviso tho, apparently, is "they will not announce anything until their realisitic expectation for a major deal is met by Elektra or other major company" and them re-forming is reliant on a deal like this so they can record new stuff and have backing for its release.
  • Also, Josh Homme is set to release more Queens of the Stone Age music in the next month or two.

    thanks Jay@Ozramp

  • The next Desert Sessions disc is to be titled "Status: Ship's Commander Butchered", it can of course be pre-ordered from MeterorCity for a price and it should be available as of Monday, February 9th assuming no delays are encountered in distribution.

  • John Garcia is working in a band called UNIDA. Although I am unclear as to wether this is his solo effort or not, there *is* supposedly such a thing and we can but hope these efforts will be recorded and signed soooon. I'll keep you posted as I am.
  • Tuesday 13-1-98

Kerrang seem to be getting well and truly on the Kyuss - reformation wagon for bands. They, as per usual have said that kyuss are getting back together without much foundation for the rumor.

  • Tuesday 6-1-98

A couple points of note. Slo Burn did in fact have a record's worth of material in the studio when they recorded the tracks which ended up on the EP. I believe there were somewhere in the viscinity of 6 other songs recorded, none of which John was happy with enough to release. (the tracks as far as I can guess would have been Wheel Fall, Positiva, Cactus Jumper, Son Of God and two others) The band was going to re-hash the songs and eventually (probably) release them, but since they broke up too soon to do so the songs are just sitting in Red Ant's archives gathering dust. John doesn't want (as he had indicated to Metal Hammer in that issue a little while back) to release anything sub-standard at all and he obviously considers these songs such.
On a more positive note, it is rumored that John is working to have Slo Burn release a bunch of live songs (through an as yet unknown label) as well as desiring to release a bunch of Live material of him with Karma To Burn... As always, I am but mentioning gossip passed down to me by far-from-the-highest authorities. But I just hope it keeps the hope running in all of you. Sometimes hope (cliched as it may be) is all fans can have when idolising a deceased band.

Apparently the 4th to the 6th releases of the Desert Sessions will have a completely different lineup performing for our listening pleasure. More info when the lineup is finally decided and made public.

    thanks Jadd

  • Listened to the Desert Sessions 10" before I went on holidays for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year so I wasnt able to voice my opinion before leaving.
Basically it could be loosely dropped into the genre of instrumental 70s-80s Brit Pop. I thought *Beatles* immediately after hearing the first couple songs and it was overall a bit of a letdown as it was so far removed from the groove of all of the band's participants originating from Kyuss, Wool, Soundgarden and Monster Magnet. It will take quite a few more listenings to acclimatise to the new style apparent on this recording.
  • Hey there again. I just bought the two latest (relevant) Mans Ruin releases. The Kyuss CD is good, as I mentioned previously the CD format is much better as far as maintaining the audio quality so it is funky to have the two 10" songs on it but the real dissappointment comes in when you realise that the third Kyuss song is just Flip The Phase, re-titled and included in the CD as it was on the One Inch Man single. I cant believe it. Some consolation is in the fact that the third Queens Of The Stone Age track is a fucking beauty. It is kind of like the other Josh Homme efforts but it also moves on into the realms of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, mixed with Nine Inch Nails. It blew me away and almost takes the top spot when concerned with Kyuss tunes behind Capsized.
I havn't yet listened to the Desert Sessions disc because the player is at my house and i havn't gone back there this week, but if "Spiders and Vinegaroons" is any indication, it should rip serious shit up.
  • There have been a plethora of suggestions from many an individual regarding a possible re-formation of Kyuss. Now far be it for me, an out-of-it Australian nobody (or *git* for short), to suggest that it is true, I really have absolutely no idea as to wether it is true or otherwise that the band has reunited. Suffice it to say that all mention of Kyuss I have heard from record stores, email, magazines and that recent interview with Jason Newstead on MTV, has mentioned that it is likely something is in the pipelines. I have also considered the fact that Brant, Alfredo and Josh are all working on the Desert Sessions together and this sounds seriously like Kyuss if I ever heard it. Maybe this is the source/reason for all the gossip mongering. Maybe not too.
Not to count my chickens before they are hatched, but I live in constant fucking hope for the former option. I know you agree.
Does anybody know for sure?? Mail Me Please
  • Not too relevant to Kyuss tidings, though of interest to people of my homeland. Metallica are once more touring this fine brown land and have set dates for Newcastle and Sydney on the second and third of March 1998. All I hope is that they drag along some cool US band like KYUSS or Queens Of The Stone Age in order to fill the lineup. It would be shit cool to see Kyuss dudes in the crowd... Oh well I will have to keep dreaming I think.
  • You know the new "desert sessions" recordings due out over the next few months from Man's Ruin? Well, apart from the 6 ten inch EP/singles that are being released, there are 3 CDs with the same music on them which have release starting in the beginning of February. Not that we will be getting the CDs only, but it is cool to know there are top quality releases due as well as the nostalgic vinyl format.
  • Anyone heard a particular song of the forthcoming Metallica album (imaginatively) titled Reload? Well, I have heard it twice in the last two days and it would seem that Jason Newstead's prediction of a few months ago was correct. He said to watch out for the new album cuz it had a fair bit of Kyuss in it. Well the song "The Memory Remains" (latest single) has a killer rhythm section that just bleeds Kyuss. Check it out if you can.
Apart from the obvious aural similarities with Kyuss, this song has a picture on the back (inside of the slimline jewel case version) which is very "Demon Cleaner"/"Sons Of Kyuss" in nature.
Something my girlfriend posed in the way of an interpretation for this song is, well fairly elementary now that I think about it. Metallica is just commenting that although it has been around 2 years since Kyuss actually last existed, their memory and musical influence still remains in music of even the musical giants like them. I think that is not reading too much into the song title...
  • Unfortunately the release date for the first installment of "The Desert Sessions" is to be set back to December 8th so there shall be still a bit more waiting for that particular item to arrive on order or in the record stores. It is still being pre-ordered from here for your information tho...
  • The Desert Sessions. The first of the six 10" singles (three of which have already been recorded) to be released as part of the "Desert Sessions" is to be titled "Instrumental Driving Music for Felons" and is to be released November 7th from Mans Ruin. There is a page at ATN which has an interview with Josh Homme and "John McBain" (geetarist) of Monster Magnet relating to the forthcoming release. It apparently has Josh, (i think that is in a production capacity moreso than instrumental) John, Soundgarden person Ben Shepard, and Brant Bjork, Alfredo, and a dude from Wool (shine 7" single b-side band) Pete Stahl.
It has been recorded thus far, in Dave Catching's "Joshua Tree" studio (I get the impression that is AKA Rancho De La Luna).
  • Kyuss. There has come to light, a new CD of Kyuss live recorded from a show they did in Texas in 1995. It includes 16 tracks from the last and second last Kyuss studio sessions, amongst a couple other Live favourites. Of course the info is available elsewhere, ie. this site Here you can get more info and order the CD as of the 27th of this here month. Good luck and be sure i will be rushing like yerself to get a copy of the CD. Catchya later.
  • Of late, there has been some speculation on the subject of wether the Slo Burn album had already been recorded. In an interview that John did in Metal Hammer recently (September issue) he implied - at least it sounded like it to me and one or two others - that the forthcoming Slo Burn album had actually already been recorded. It was simply a matter of weeding out the stuff they didn't want on there and releasing it.
I have also heard it speculated that Slo Burn - Damon, Brady and Chris, that is have been signed already to another label. No confirmation here so don't just take my word for it.
  • Some encouraging news from the mouth of Mr Kozic, is that the first installment of "The Desert Sessions" featuring Josh Homme amongst other notables will be released - SOON - (no date tho.)

Also he gave me the title of the other long awaited CD. It is Kyuss "Queens Of The Stone Age" and is only 6 tracks (albeit 6 cool tracks) namely

      Kyuss
      • Into The Void
      • Fatso Forgetso
      • "Its a surprise... you'll have to buy the CD"
      The Gamma Ray Sessions
      • If Only everything
      • Born To Hula
      • Spiders and Vinegaroons (previously unreleased)
Fucking cool or what? Personally, I can't wait for the December 5 scheduled release date.
  • OK, on a more congenial note, here is the go with John, Damon, and the rest of the boys from Slo Burn.
John : He has left the band because of "creative diferences" and so they are temporarily singerless. Another thing is that the other three wanted to move out of California and John wasn't happy to do that and so told them basically to fuck off. Understandable. If you recall, he had a project called Thirteen along with the more famous project - Slo Burn. Anyhow, this band has recorded a demo tape apparently - three tracks - which is circulating SoCal which is obviously a good sign. (I'm trying to obtain a copy)
The other three guys are still together but it is unclear if they will retain the existing title or not. All the members were signed to Red Ant for the term of one album (EP too?) and so, the way I understand it, anything released by any of the members until their contractual obligation is met must be released through Red Ant. Keep an ear out for Thirteen...

Ta Jadd for keeping in touch with Man's Ruin, and keeping me informed too as I am relatively unable (to phone that is).

  • Hey fucking fuck head motherfuckers goddamn shit fuck.... Slo Fucking Burn broke up and just when I was hoping to witness the first touch of Kyuss on our Australian shores in the last 5 years I may be considered to be mightily pissed. "Internal Troubles" apparently. Fuck, I cant be bothered. See you.
  • Well, apart from the CD already mentioned here as coming out from Man's Ruin in the near future consisting of Queens, Gamma Ray.... There is also one supposedly coming out around the same time called "The Desert Sessions" which, I have been informed, will have members of Kyuss, Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, and Fu Manchu. Well, what is this crazey sludge-heavy-music world coming to?
  • Excellent, Slo Burn have decided to cease the teasing of the Southern hemisphere fans, with their incessant Northern hemisphere tours, by doing some shows in Australia in November. This wonderful news came via the possible Australian support act DernRutlidge, a Melbourne hardcore band. I cant fucking believe it, but n ow I have the thankless task of trying to obtain back-stage passes so I can "hang out" with them. Shit. Anyone out there that can help me??? please mail me. Or try phoneing (+61) 017 151 794 some time during the day. Ta.
  • Alrightey, Mr Barry Reager, attourney, has been in touch of late and had this to say about the bootleg CD mentioned in the trades section of the pages I have set up here.

Black Jeweler-it's named after my car(a black Ford Explorer that
was lent to a jeweler in Palm Springs to transport stones to and from Los Angeles)

There was a bit more to the correspondence but being the selfish dick that I am, well, I kept it for myself. Sorry. Hopefully Scott will be back on the internet again soon and we will be able to contact him with questions and maybe even re: future releases. Later freaks.

  • Mondo Generator have a demo recording that has been circulated in small circles in the states and maybe across to the UK. The genre happens to be Punk of all things. Maybe Kyuss wasn't that far from the punk side of music but I would not be surprised if the music didn't appeal to most lovers of the late Kyuss. There is at least one source of this music, if you are interested contact this man: Jadd Shickler and he should be able to help you.
  • Latest word (in)directly from Man's Ruin records. Jadd has told me that there is apparently going to be a CD release from this brilliant label in the next couple of months that will contain songs from Gamma Ray, Queens..., Kyuss (at least one of the last recorded songs from the as-yet unreleased Rancho material), Kyuss into the void/fatso and well maybe that will be all. Well the only news that could possibly be better would be to hear that the boys are back together... unlikely in the immediate future I know, but nevertheless, if that isn't brilliant news, well I dont know what is.
    I'll keep you posted.
  • OK, check here because, as usual, Mr Giampaolo has copped a visit from one of the ex-band members, Nick, who informed him that Mondo Generator is actually a real thing, the band is an item, it just doesn't include Josh or Brant Bjork.
Check his page for details. (not me, no never me, Ill just sit here alone and visitorless while Dominic gets all the important calls... Do you know that i got 6 whole visitors the other day? 6. God that makes me feel important)
  • It would seem that Kerrang have just been festering rumours bout Kyuss and the old members getting together in the format of "Mondo Generator". Dunno if Dominic Presented this on his page but Mr Bjork said that there has been nothing of the sort and that though there may have been a bit of fucking round between him and Josh there was certainly not any project like this in existence. Who woulda thought that they would have formed a project and named it after one of their songs anyway? It is just a song. That's all.

How disappointing. They like to stir up shit don't they? (the tabloid press that is)....

  • Another, long-time, correspondent of mine, Detmar Hess (alias "fucking legend") saw the Dynamo Festival too. It would seem that everyone was mightily pleased to see Slo Burn, and also Karma To Burn during their brief stay.
A couple of months ago KTB fired the vocalist, Mr Jarosz (maybe he quit, either way, the vocalist that appeared on the album is no more) and apparently, the band are planning on being an instrumental band from now on, for ever..
Anyway, the reason for mentioning Karma To Burn is that John actually went out and did Vocals for a couple of their songs. Understandably, this happened to just make people's weekends.

The songs which Slo Burn played were, all the tracks off the EP and also all of the tracks off the 1996 Demo. Using my brilliant mathematical skills, this would tend to indicate that they played, rather than the previously thought five, approximately seven songs in their short set. Bbbbbrilliant.

  • Some more News that I have come across just today (21-5-97) is that "There are, and will be no more Kyuss releases EVER". This is assuming they don't end up hooking up together again to release anything. Though this is quite disheartening, it is obvious that the members of the band do not hate eachother and so it is possible to see a re-union somewhere in the distant future, maybe, possibly, hopefully (hope against hope).

Queens of The Stone Age are in the process of recording and rehearsing material for another release over the next few months and will be (almost definately) releasing whatever they come up with on Mans Ruin.

Slo Burn are currently doing the Ozzfest tour (ozzy osborne tour) in the States and have done numerous tours in North America and Eastern Europe over the last few months since the release of their first EP. Denis Hoffman, who attended The Dynamo Festival in Eindhoven (holland) told me that they played about five songs of which at least one was not on the EP, and John, sometime during the show said that they had a full length release due out around the beginning of next year!!!
Another person mailed me saying that the release will just be out somewhere during "the fall" (northern hemisphere). Suffice it to say that they will have an album (most probably on Vinyl too) around Christmas, and knowing the Record company shit we get all the time, it is probable that the album will actually be there next year early (as John said).

As you may not have known, Scott Reeder, was a part of a project with members from Fu Manchu which was called Nebula. This band was apparently cruising along, rehearsing and shit. Unfortunately, Scott recently quit the band in preference to opening a pet shop in Palm Desert - California!! (good fucking on him for being able to do something not music/movie related).

It would seem that this week is not a great week for positive Kyuss tidings, but here we are.

  • A couple of people have mailed me with the wonderful news that Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork have formed a project called Mondo Generator. This was printed in the Brit music fanzine called Kerrang, and although it may just be speculation, we can but hope for a result of the Kyuss kind from this.
  • Once again, in Drum Media this week, 6th May 1997 edition, there was mention of Kyuss in Murray Engelheart's Remedy column, it was, I think, a write up based on an interview Josh Homme did on Melbourne's RRR radio station. It went like this:

Former Kyuss guitarist, Josh Homme is getting a new band toghther called Queens Of The Stone Age. They make their first appearance on the recent Burn One Up stoner, tripper compilation. "I'd done a couple of songs to get kicked off [Kyuss Label] Elektra," Homme told Remedy. "It was mostly by myself. That's where the idea started. Then I started hooking up with this guy named Dave Catching and we just started writing some songs. We happened to be in Amsterdam at the end of the Screaming Trees tour (Homme was playing guitar) and this Burn One Up compilation came up. So we grabbed a couple of friends from this band, Beaver (who are also on Burn One Up) and recorded a song. That was so easy and casual that we were like, well, maybe we should play these songs that I recorded before and turn it into a band. I'm still into heavy rock music but it's going to be way more diverse I think. I want to fill the gaps, whatever isn't going on in music I want to go over there."

A little more informative this time round wouldn't you say. Well that is still cool he takes the time to write about Kyuss and their stuff. Maybe I was wrong about the Melbourne Radio thingy, but as an aside, that happened recently and yours truly will be recieving a copy soon (as soon as I can get my butt in gear about a trade for it)
  • Well, I just picked up the newest edition of the best Sydney music newspaper around (the Tuesday 22nd April issue) and was mightily surprised to notice that in the 'Remedy' column that they run every week, there was some news on the late Kyuss amongst much news of a less interesting kind. Upon further reading, however, I was dissapointed to realise that they appeared to be behind the rest of the world by a couple of weeks, the "news" was as follows:
"Kyuss are gone but they sure ain't buried. Fu Manchu's 10" green vinyl single of the Blue Oyster Cult's classic plodder, Godzilla was produced by ex-Kyuss guitar-through-bass-amp man, Josh Homme and features long time ex-Kyuss drummer, Brant Bjork.

Speaking of Kyuss there's a crazed new stoner compilationout called Burn One Up that features Josh Homme's new band, Queens of the Stone Age as well as Fu Manchu, Sabbath masters, Sleep, Cathedral and Floodgate. Sludgarama and most of the tracks are previously unreleased."

Interesting, the definition of news in this instance. After all this trashing of the local music rag I should acknowledge the fact that if no Internet access is present for a Kyuss fan, it is hard to find info apart from the pitance in the relevant papers, so I suppose it has its merits. Anyway just thought it was interesting, and for those that didn't know, well here is some new news!!
  • When Kyuss split (sob sob) Josh Homme was offered a solo album deal by elektra and released a 7" single (clear vinyl pressing) on Frank Kozic's Man's Ruin label under the name Gamma Ray. Elektra and Man's Ruin are currently negotiating for the release of more of Gamma Ray's material while Josh settles on a more suitable name for his solo effort. At this stage he seems to be leaning to "Queens Of The Stone Age" or something thereabouts. If you havn't checked the Guestbook one of my kind visitors posted a message informing of a "Queens of the stone age" song released called '18 AD' on some compilation. Just checked on it and the compilation isrright now available from CD Europe for $47.95 and CD Banzai $?... (also look at the discography, may prove to be some small help. It is called Burn One Up and is imported from Holland/Germany. Good Luck.
(As an aside, John Garcia does backup vocals on one of the already released tracks called Born To Hula)
Here too is If Only Everything

  • Kyuss went in to do a recording session at Rancho De La Luna a short time before they split up and ended up laying down a good half a dozen or more tracks including the already available Into The Void/Fatso Forgetso single from Man's Ruin on purple vinyl, and one 12 minute jam!Wonder when & where this will pop up. With a total playing time of around 17 minutes for the two tracks alone Kyuss fans will not be disappointed with the already released offerings.
PS if anybody has or sees Sky Valley, Blues or Wretch on Vinyl I would be ever so greatfull if you could grab it or at least tellme how to get it because I am totally obsessed with getting them.Ta.
Really, If anybody that visits these pages knows of anything new or at all possibly of interest about any of the bands/things talked about here ESPECIALLY Kyuss, since much of my time and money is spent in the pursuit of anything to do with this wonderful band, it would give me no end of interest to hear from you.
    (you know how)

    Thanks in advance...
