Crooked Hook – Self Titled Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com) Safety Meeting Records Release February 14, 2006 Recorded live, with only vocals added later, Connecticut’s Crooked Hook is another one of those bands that effortlessly channels long past eras. In the case of this three-piece, it’s the early Sabbath/Blue Cheer era of heavy, fuzz’d out blues rock. Songs like “I Just Might Crack,” “Electric Friend,” and “Tempting Music” bustle with stoner friendly grooves and could be used as textbook examples of the genre. What really stuck out for me was the last song, “Slow Sun,” where they lay off on the distortion and come up with a melancholy vibe that makes me wish I had bought a bong last time I had the chance. Really impressive stuff.

I'm Loving this EP. I've seen these guys a couple times, and they rock each and everytime. By far, Oreon is my favorite track. These guys have all sorts of psychedelic/garage influences but don't hit you over the head with them. If you're into Blue Cheer, Hawkwind, the Groundhogs, Sabbath, etc then these guys are sure to be your next favorite band.

These songs are catchier than a dose of the clap. Hook after hook after hook. Good stuff.

I was at the cd release show in New Haven and picked up a copy there. It's been in the rotation ever since! They played some other songs not on the cd that show promise as well. And yes, a vinyl release would be cool!

This EP is the shit!! Super fuzzed-out, real vintage-sounding, it primarily reminds me of Blue Cheer, Pentagram, early Fu Manchu, Drag Pack and Ogre. It's on eMusic now, so no reason not to get it, seeing as it almost goes for free!!
